I'm English but my family passes down the Clan name as a middle name, the Clan imagery is also heavily displayed in our heraldry (which is directly passed on in England).

Recent research has concluded that not only was the sock knife not once an underarm knife but that it is anachronistic, made up because it looks neat later. Historically Scots carried bollack daggers and those would evolve into the Dirk, possibly via Irish influence (the Irish liking long bladed daggers which they used like shortswords), before that they probably used much the same as the rest of the British isles, Seaxs (which were the fashion for something silly like 800 years, only ending well into the medieval period) followed by medieval fashions, including and leading in to the common use of the bollack and then it's development, probably centering on the border region rather than the highlands.
