  1. It remains a constant pressure on the Kremlin. However a unilateral attack won't happen while Russia has nukes, just a continued closing of proximity. Ironically America and Europe are heading in a poor direction politically and demographically meaning that Russia could be favour by a waiting game.... if only Russia wasn't in an even worse state on those issues than the west. For both Russia and China their futures hinge on whether they can turn the birth rates around. Western values other than low corruption are not worth the price of adoption especially as most are unproven. Western economic structure is a house of cards and when taken with other issues might be even worse than Oligarchs. The US is strong so long as it doesn't self sabotage like the USSR did but Europe is pretty screwed and shows no intent to change that.
