  1. No, the culture existed for thousands of years, social liberalism has been around for much less and has the same effect everywhere. Look at the west, are Italian birth rates due to Japanese cultural traditions.

  2. Stephen Shaw (who is japan based), has pointed out that mothers have As many children as ever. The problem is people who don't get or stay married, basically the old social structures of arranged marriage and courting, as well as large but close family and community structures served a purpose. Capitalism has It's place but it is a consuming force, if you put all your crops into the fire it will burn ferocious but you will have nothing to plant; it will go out and you will be both hungry and cold. Ultimately the national, social, ethnic, cultural and human existence is worth continuing over GDP figures or short-term prosperity. The real trouble is uncertainty, if people feel like they will be supported in having kids they will have them, this is not in child care, which has serious detrimental impacts on children and costs a bomb, this is in community support structures, reliable work and a feeling of purpose. There is a reason that fertility is heavily tied to religion. Likewise Japan should learn to decouple from western innovations, many of these are hardly good, and only become worse when made more efficient in the hands of the Japanese. Also if you have immigration limit it to native European families and Chinese and Koreans who speak the language, even that would be a struggle, but it would not destroy the Japanese people. Also your politician is mad, and ignorant, and I say that as someone to the considerable right of him.

  4. 30's isn't, any older and IVF is the only option, and it has a low success rate as well as a very high rate of problems in children that are born (like incest between siblings level high).

  7. It would be fine, the structures would conform, intelligence has gone up and down throughout history. The trouble is he is literally wrong, as things are intelligent is negatively correlated with fertility, clever people work, the underclass have kids. Even in Japan where welfare fuels this less.

  8. He is also wrong in that in this system the bottom has more children than the top. He is literally advocating for a system that gives him the opposite of what he wants.

  9.  @Sup_D  Less taxes and the population is less productive, but yeah it concentrates wealth. And that is almost certainly part of the motivation in the west. Though it will be very short lived as a hollowed out society is easy pickings, but I'm not sure people with no future anyway care. The thing is that the politician didn't say that, and didn't come off as intelligent enough to think it and say otherwise. Also from my understanding the Japanese elite are suggestible rather than malicious and most of these negative policies need considerable backing by the US state department and the NGO network. Though they seem to be on the trajectory to get what they want.

  12.  @ohauss  Stephen Shaw, the demographics expert has himself made the comparison as they follow almost exactly the same trend line. The trouble is people not pairing up to create children within their fertility window, whether married or not. By the way the trend line is very economically sensitive, both Japan and Italy have a long history of a fairly fragile economic order. I imagine the factor of the collapse of traditional family structures and social norms coinciding can be called happenstance, though the fact is that both were underlined by American cultural colonisation of the protectorates that make up their informal empire.

  13.  @WilliamSantos-cv8rr  Fertility is not genetic it is cultural, and a refection of a social and policy context. Likewise it works on an exponential growth and decline trend. If the Japanese get the birth rate up enough they are a generation away from recovery. Diversifying the nation, especially in a democracy introduces considerable weakness to a country, Japan has not been able to integrate it's own diaspora, any foreigners would form parallel societies, its just that those groups would cause the least trouble. Immigration and multiculturalism only work in Kingdoms and Empires as the Monarchical form of government by nature allows for considerable autonomy and a political structure in which fighting between groups is not encouraged by the need for ethnic blocks to fight for interests, or America in which immigrants are re-educated into an ideological project, in much the same way as a shared religion breaks down ethnic boundaries (though not nearly as effectively as a religion like liberalism, which denies the differences in the first place).
