Martyrmade has started a series on this topic, basically it was seen as an existential conflict, and the allies were stupid enough to give fuel to that fire with genocidal rhetoric which was then immediately turned back upon them by the propaganda of the German regime. If you think you are going to die anyway you will fight, especially with family behind you.
