Japan was utterly different and poorly researched due to a predominance of worse historians than elsewhere (they have fixed on fascism as an aesthetic as they very quickly ran into the problem that the Japanese were very blatantly not fascist and showed every sign of not even understanding the ideology). Spain had fascists but they were as different as Mosley is from Mussolini and were largely intentionally disempowered by Franco who was probably less fascist than Churchill and FDR (he was an authoritarian, a rabid Catholic and a monarchist, one also gets the impression that he was a political realist and largely non-ideological but rather very religious (if the two can even be said to be different things), in short he was an actual reactionary who hated all forms of revolutionary thought).

I can in a modern university, in fact I've heard similar along the lines of "I'm not a right winger but as an academic I must urge you to be more sceptical of social constructivism, it really doesn't hold much water among professional philosophers". The fact is that there are plenty of people who just resort to name calling when ideas they are invested in are refuted.
