@AlpaTyrant That’s way I mentioned insurgency. Knowing the Russians they would likely deal with the issue through indiscriminate shelling. I couple of sources I’ve seen suggest however that Russia’s goal wouldn’t be occupation (even for Donbas) but rather to change the constitution to one the makes power highly decentralised and thus easy to influence, basically do what the Tsardom did to the polish-Lithuanian commonwealth (with the donbas as their direct proxy). There has also been allegations that they are just interfering with the Ukrainian economy at a time when it’s looking unhealthy to make them default on loans and don’t actually plan to invade.

The EU does play a hand in all, or at least the European court does. However the issue is one much stronger on the national level in western Europe and EU viewpoints are mostly just used for legitimation by the existing elites on the issues. The much more immediate threat is the terrible birth rates, something which is very destabilising as the welfare systems rely on a growing working age population to sustain pensions and pay for health care which the elderly disproportionately use. Immigrants have been getting used to stopgap this but it isn't a permanent solution as ironically despite the arguments over integration one thing immigrants integrate into after a generation or two is not having kids. The current model places us under threat of becoming vampire states, sucking the youth out of other countries to sustain ourselves.

As most analysts have said, Russia would win, as much of the military command and strategic areas would be blown up by missile strikes, the Ukrainian military would be blown to bits by massed artillery fire and any survivors mopped up by overwhelming tank formations on flat plains, cities would be surrounded and besieged. They all think that the real threat will be insurgency.

@artmcteagle I’m not sure it could be considered a good thing even in the 1930s possibility worse considering what the soviets were like. There is a difference between stating likelihood's and wanting them to happen. I don’t have a ball in the fight but if it kicks off a wider war (which seems unlikely at the moment) then I’ll join my country’s military and likely fight Russia in the following conflict.
