  1. Given contemporary accounts of Barbary slavery it's safe to say he's talking out his arse. Bit like complaining about being fed royal navy rations and the French being smart enough to engage in gambling, he's relying on the readers presumed unfamiliarity with such subjects in order to talk a lot of bull about a reasonably mundane set of circumstances.
