If a recall there was basic knowledge of how to create gunpowder before it was imported from China and it was realised that it could be used for warfare. If I recall it was something along the lines of medieval alchemist books warning not to mix those ingredients as the results could be volatile. Pretty such there was some monk who is meant to have done some sort of experiments with it as well. But as said before introduction from China it seems like the secret recipe everyone would have been interested in was Greek fire as that had a proven track record as a weapon of war and didn't have a tendency of blowing your limbs off as payment for curiosity.
