With the Azerbaijan threat seems like it could be helped with Armenian support. Perhaps Iran could do a two for one deal with Russia, every military asset the Russians give to Armenia Iran will deliver two of the equivalent to Russia. Because of the war Russia has backed off from Armenia, an incentive to stay involved would be valuable to Iran, but they won't want their involvement to be obvious, thus it is better to act through the existing hegemon of Armenia, and to make sure that the supplies, money and advisers are likewise Russian.

It's a religion, not that there's really a tangible difference. Also western liberal democracy will not be capable of defeating it as it is itself a parasite system which collapses in on itself without exploiting the fruits of systems with surplus production, most notably in people. The alternatives to Islam are other religious political forces like Christianity and Confucianism, these both often hard resistance and are capable of sustaining themselves on a civilisational level. Of course whether such forces, which have been thoroughly subverted by liberalism (egalitarian capitalist (corporate socialist) democracy (elective managerial oligarchy) with Christianity, socialism (state capitalism) with Chinese characteristics (communist aesthetics) with Confucianism) will do so is another matter.
