History does matter, it is why we are where we are after all. But in terms of public feeling it is the perception of history that matters, the Scottish nationalists have been pretty good at pushing an interpretive version of Scottish history in schools and have been backed up by plenty of romantic tripe, all of which forgot inconvenient parts like the existence of the lowlands even though they are the successors to the political and cultural establishment of lowland interests and instead focus on why a government which is somehow less competent than that of England (quite the achievement honestly) should be given a whole the right to carve up the nation to their own interest and greed for power.

Not ethnically they aren't. And considering they formed the majority even before unification of the crowns that logic would make Scotland majority English during the wars with England. The lowlanders are or were their own culture but that was most certainly a Scottish one.

Pretty much exactly what is happening, it's a major strategic weakness of the UK and if the UK leadership and institutions continue to be moronic (100% chances of that) then any moment of weakness could essentially be used to break the UK into its component parts and end the 1000 year old English project of consolidation and expansion.

And China should give up all their land outside of Beijing, sure that will make them a lot more powerful. If that's the level of logic give me your house, you can live in the plant pot. You'll get the most productive land and won't have to pay the bills anymore.

That is just why devolved governments are stupid, if you set up a parallel government for Norfolk you'd soon enough have calls for independence from a body who's main interest would lay in empowering themselves at the cost of the national body.
