One of the biggest mistakes of imperial policy, America was very obviously the main threat to British global interests and yet we were continually blinded by a Whig sentimentality. The opportunity to balkenise the US was a unique opportunity. Of course the repeal of the corn laws, British investment and the treasonous actions of certain politician during the war in giving that wealth and practically all the rest of the wealth of the Empire away to the very state most hostile to us to win a war against a power which couldn't existentially threaten British power and indeed didn't even care to were also to blame. In a way the roots of the problem go back to those of our own civil war, the creation of liberalism and the circumstances and limits of it's usurpation of power meant that our political class would always hold America up as an ideal while flagrantly insulting the very responsibilities towards our own people which they had usurped from the King. This is not to get into the religious aspects, nor the open corruption of such an excuse of a political system.
