As a Dutchman let me clear a few things:
-Sinterklaas has nothing to do with Cristmas, we celebrate Christmas just like other countries.
-The earrings and red lips are pretty much gone in most of them.
-His role is not to scare or punish anymore, this too has changed, he is adored by the children he helps children, gives candy, is happy and funny.
-Pete is NOT a slave, St.Nicolas(Sinterklaas) freed slaves and the freed slaves, helped him out of gratefulness and to help free others. So it is not remnant of the colonial past.
-The black color is because of the dirt in the chimney.
-People got arrested while protesting because they were protesting in an area where it was not allowed.
-The woman from the UN who was against, was invited to come and see the the annual parade to see what the tradition was truly about. She declined.
So because it's a black character it is racist, just because he/she is black? When it's a white character it is ok? So he can be white but not black? Now that is racist. Besides there is only a very small group in the Netherlands that doesn't like the character. You seem to know absolutely nothing about your own country's tradition. And honestly what I am wondering, if you don't like a cultural tradition in a country, why move there?
