If any thinking person maintained faith and confidence in the FBI after the Church Committee hearings of the 1970s, their judgment and character are questionable at best.

48 years. Files were seized after he died, used to continue and expand the Bureau's unconstitutional power. Hillary later seized them in what was known as FILEGATE during her time in the WH. It was one of the many scandals going on at the time, along with Whitewater cocaine money laundering real estate scam in Arkansas, Fostergate assassination of the Deputy WH Counsel/bagman for running back and forth to Switzerland 12-20x per year, DEA and Arkansas Trooper referrals to DOJ of various crimes, Hillary's cattle futures scandal, etc. Clinton fired the FBI Director the day before they killed Foster, because Foster didn't show up to the damage control meeting over the weekend. Clinton WH was under immense pressure with 14 referrals to the FBI to investigate him and Hillary for high crimes, including treason.

He amassed power over 48 years as the Director of an unconstitutional secret police, compiling an extensive and illegal collection of files on prominent people throughout society, including Presidents, Congressmen, Governors, Chiefs of Police, businessmen, actors, political activists, and mayors. They did this under the guise of anti-communism, while being co-opted by the Soviets out of the gate when the Bureau was founded. The Bureau has been an unmitigated catastrophe for the US, resulting in close to a century of unconstitutional secret police activities directed mostly against the innocent, while covering for the guilty-as long as they increase their power.

@popularhistory6118 Soviets co-opted the FBI early-on, to use as a disruptive and demoralizing secret police within the US, as well as a Trojan horse ministry of internal security modeled after their own Cheka. It would serve as a useful tool against Presidents, Congress, DoD, and State LE, providing a massive internally-funded surveillance state directed against key people in the US, helping the Soviets to target and exploit those people for Soviet interests. They also use the Bureau to cover their high-level moles, shutting down any effective counterintelligence operations wherever possible, and feed moles from FBI into CIA and other agency ranks at their pleasure. You get a sense of this studying the JFK, RFK, MLK assassinations, Church Committee hearings, Ali Mohamed case, 1993 WTC bombing, OKC Bombing, Al Farouque mosque in Brooklyn, and Robert Hanssen cases. Soviets have leveraged the Bureau to enhance terrorist and foreign intelligence service operations directed against the US throughout its history. They've been played like a fiddle by the Russians/Soviets.

He openly ridiculed people who talked about the Mafia, saying it was a myth, while secretly partying poolside with senior mob bosses in Vegas. He is a cancerous stain on the history of the United States-a wretched curse on our rule of law, emblematic of a secret police surveillance state drunk with power.

He was in every way the opposite of a good man. He was one of the biggest curses on the US, heading an unconstitutional Federal agency that failed its job of counterintelligence as a rule, while providing a database for the Soviets to exploit and enhance their aggressive intelligence activities directed against the US. He also asserted very passionately and dismissively that the Mafia was a myth, while secretly partying poolside with Mafia bosses in Vegas. We have photos of it now. He encouraged Martin Luther King to kill himself, covered for LBJ's laundry list of high treason, blackmailed the Kennedy Brothers, covered up high treason by FDR transferring nuke technology to the Soviets, and lived a life of preposterous treason against the United States on so many levels. He's literally one of the greatest stains on our Nation-a rabid curse with a legacy that continues to corrode what little is left of checks and balances against the surveillance state.

@justmytype.6061 How about never let a Federal secret police be formed, and promote bordering State inter-agency cooperation. Prohibition corrupted law enforcement from sea to shining sea. FBI weaseled into the picture afterwords with the Lindberg baby case to justify further LE powers, but was already being promoted by the Soviets quietly as an important vector they could use as a secret police. The mission of counterintelligence is a critical one, and very dicey as to checking its power from being abused. Allowing a mama's boy pansy to run a Federal secret police is begging for it to be abused. Too much centralized power, overstepping States' and individual rights, while failing miserably at counterintelligence is not a good legacy for this curse on us.
