"Mormon" is a derogatory term coined by people and purposely used by newspapers who persecuted members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in the 1800s, specifically designed to eliminate the mentioning of Jesus Christ in the name. It caught on because it's much easier to say. It's like saying "Jew Boy", "Kike", "Papist", or "Raghead".
