JDAMs were not used in Desert Storm. The primary Guided Bomb Units were Laser-Guided in Desert Storm. JDAMs came well after Desert Storm. We worked on GPS-guided bombs on the F-15 CTF at Edwards before it was even called GPS.

@Withnail1969 There are videos of Russian pilots using US-made GPS receivers, bolted into wooden frames on top of their instrument panel covers.

Yup. We developed some of the first GPS-guided kits in conjunction with Eglin and Nellis when we were on the F-15 Combined Test Force at Edwards AFB, and it was done in the early-mid 1990s after Desert Storm. There were no JDAMs in Desert Storm, as the systems had not been developed yet. GBU-12s and GBU-10s were used in ODS, especially by the F-111F, F-15E, and A-6E.

Why would anyone compare a FAB-1500 to a Mk.82 or GBU-12 when the 2000lb JDAM is the norm? Maybe someone doesn’t know their munitions that well.

@jvjd What fighters is Ukraine using to launch Storm Shadows and HARMs then? If you don’t know current battle order, don’t comment outside of your area of knowledge.

@Withnail1969 Russian fighters are suffering unsustainable losses, especially the Su-34. It takes years to build a single Su-34, and even with the production line open, they are not rolling off in numbers to counter the losses. Full-rate production began in 2008, with a projected 70 aircraft by 2015. They have delivered 148 production models, 25 of which have been shot down over or near the border of Ukraine, out of a total of over 30 airframe losses.

Desert Storm was the most decisive and important battle of the 20th Century, because it demonstrated what the US military could do to a huge military in a matter of days, with basically a one-sided fight. I lived through the cutting-edge development of the technologies that won ODS from the 1970s-1991, as well as the asymmetric warfare launched against us since by Russia and China, since they knew they could never go toe-to-toe with the US.

@HiwasseeRiver There is no peer to the US if we’re talking about military strength, economy, agriculture, GDP, force projection capacity, naval dominance, technology, training, etc.

I’ve been following Peter since he was with STRATFOR in the 2000s, and this is not a good commentary from him. He got many basic facts wrong about JDAM, when it was introduced, and improperly emphasized the Mk.82 variant over the actual primary JDAM, the 2000lb Mk.84 variants.

There is nothing new about this, and this video is really weird to focus on it, while getting many facts totally wrong. JDAMs in Desert Storm (didn’t exist), Mk.82 500lb emphasis instead of Mk.84 2000lb JDAMs, etc. He stepped out of his area of knowledge on this one big time.

@j.k.1239 Oryx Report, complete with photograpic and video documenting of the losses. Not Ukrainian MoD. That doesn't include Su-27SM, Su-30M, or Su-35 losses by the way. They have lost a lot of Su-30s as well.
