@YAMAHA1 I lived there from 2008-2009. It’s one of the most underdeveloped major cities in the world, due to extreme cold and broken 5-year plan Khrushchev-era apartments still standing. Modernity escapes Russia because of the distance of the trade routes and no incentive for modernized societies to trade with Russia in a high value-added market.

@GenovaYork951 None of those countries are even close to being Central Europe. If Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, and Slovenia are Eastern Europe, then Belorussia, Ukraine, and Russia certainly aren’t Central Europe. In Russia, they teach geography differently saying there is no such thing as a separate Europe and Asia, but Eurasia.

@YAMAHA1 I’ve lived in Moscow and have been all over Western Europe. You’re smoking crack if you think Moscow is even remotely-comparable. Infrastructure, services, corruption, driving habits, thievery, and black market functionality make Moscow a totally-opposite metro area compared to most of Europe. Just basic access to clean water in the Khrushchev-era apartments in Moscow is an issue. We had to resupply people with clean water from countryside wells, filled in large water bottles and tied together with plastic grocery bags so you could haul 2x as many of them up the stairs. The water in the faucets in many apartment complexes in Moscow looks like a mix of urine, excrement, and rust. This is not even remotely the case in Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Netherlands, or the UK. Moscow is a place time forgot, very old and decrepit. The only new things about it came from Germany and the West, which are mere sprinkles of technology and products that would never have emerged from Russia in a hundred years, left to its own devices.

Poland’s GDP has tripled since 1990, while Ukraine has stood by and watched Poland benefit from being integrated with the Western trade network. Poland doesn’t want to see it all crumble.

@atam3977 If you consider the Ural Mountains the Eastern boundaries of Europe, but that area is more Asian than people who haven’t been there know. I noticed that in Russia, it is more Asian than I expected, and the Russians don’t consider there to be a separate continent of Europe, just Eurasia. Given that Moscow has a lot of Asian characteristics, where do you draw the line? That still puts the German-Polish border in the center, making Poland still fall on the Eastern geometric side of Europe. Either way, the poster I was responding to asserted that Belorussia and Russia are part of Central Europe, when no matter how you draw the map even with the Urals as an Eastern boundary, Belarussia and Western Russia would still fall within the East.

@monikamona6844 The Khrushchev-era apartments were built in the 1950s, only meant to last 5-7 years until they could figure out how to build better ones. The pipes are trash, filled with rust. When you turn on the faucet, brown and yellow water comes out.

@danielsmithiv1279 There will be 500+ F-35s stationed in Europe within the next 5 years. 1000 have already been manufactured. Su-57 doesn't even have as good of sensors on older 4.5 fighters. Russian semiconductor industry is way behind the times. They also don't have Izdeliye-30 motors in production for the Su-57, so it uses Flanker variant Saturn engines in the meantime. When the ATF program began flight testing, they had 4 different types of 5th Gen engines to choose from in 1990. The F-35 motors are more advanced than that, producing 43 000lbs of thrust, incorporating VLO features into them, with FADEC and prognostic management of the engine parameters. Russia is decades behind in this space. The old 1950s F-102 & F-106 had tighter weapons bay door gaps than the Su-57 does, which is shameful.

@monikamona6844 The Moscow metro system is old, decrepit, and weird. First time I entered the station at Pushkino, the militsia attacked an old man who was with his wife. I think they thought he didn't have a ticket, but he did. They just assaulted him for no apparent reason. When we got to the Moscow central station, I saw a guy with no legs, no pelvis even, attached to a cheap wooden board with casters, propelling himself with his hands on the ground. In my mind I thought, "What is this strange hell?"

@monikamona6844 There have been tons of Russians who immigrated to Finland. There is no law banning Russian language. There's a huge Russian Orthodox Cathedral in Helsinki with a giant golden dome, prominent for all to see by the main harbor. Russians go to Finnish language training to become functional in Finnish. When I was taking Finnish classes there, half my class were Russians. The instructor was an older Russian lady who had lived in Finland for many years.

@monikamona6844 The Russian intelligence services began tasking Russian immigrants into Finland by locating themselves in key places, buying properties next to Finnish Air Force bases, airports, and military installations. Putin has been planning to take back every former Czarist-era buffer state since he assumed the presidency in Jan, 2000. The Russian lady who taught Finnish language courses in Helsinki was/is an SVR asset.
