@TheVoiceofTheProphetElizer If you study the totality of the Soviet defector literature, you find two basic types: 1. Fake defectors 2. Real defectors who genuinely were disillusioned with the Soviet system The Soviets went to extremes to silence or discredit the real defectors. Bezmenov was a real defector who explained their emphasis on Active Measures, not collection. They had and still have thousands of people handing them over collection-focused technologies, material samples, and information. But the Russian leadership knew they could never go toe-to-toe with the US militarily. The only way to deal with the US was subversion.

@moggadah Russia was and is a closed society, where people are not political. You can't use Active Measures against them the way they have done in open societies. Sure, they have people who are willing to be bribed, but they just feed dumb information to those assets so they and their handlers can get paid. But you can't own significant numbers of their Duma like they do in the US, UK, Germany, and France. Zeihan never talks about Russian Active Measures because it forces you to see how many US politicians have been bought for generations.

@acidbronson9712 Project Minaret predates that. All telecom has been wire-tapped for decades before the internet. FBI is a Mafia enforcement organization to protect their bought-off criminal elite in DC. Hoover ran protection for the Mafia even after 1957 Appalachin raid.
