@smileygladhands Norks have never been in a position to strike Taiwan. Their military posture is oriented towards South Korea and Japan.

@CMark89 Peter Z has covered the Belt & Road Initiative for years. Imagine trying to shift your imports and exports from sea-based high volume under US protection, to land-based through the most warlord-infested, mountainous, remote regions in the world, where Iran is along that road to Saudi Arabia. It's one of the most ridiculous proposals in history.

@markc6714 US has been in strategic withdrawal from the Pacific since the 1990s. We used to have more significant permanent basing in Japan, South Korea, and the Philippines. One of the bases I was stationed at on the DMZ was abandoned many years ago. Our Large Force Exercises were reduced in size from Team Spirit to Foal Eagle. Clark AFB in the Philippines was abandoned, but we are reestablishing some presence there again. If you've followed Peter's analyses since the 2000s, you would know that he has a better awareness of all this than US politicians and senior military officers.

@thomasprice7893 PLAAF plays a big role in the invasion of Taiwan as well, not just PLN. China is cranking out J-20 stealth fighters with acquired US technology by the hundreds. There are only 3-4 US Carrier Battle Groups on deployment at any time. Others are at home ports or undergoing refit/ overhaul maintenance.

@benz9063 North Korea has a ridiculous arsenal of artillery, rockets, and missiles aimed Seoul, because Seoul is so close to the DMZ. I was stationed there for a year and went back for strategic-level exercises, very familiar with the Korean Peninsula. It would be ugly.

@wakannnai1 I can agree with that, though I haven't made any statements about Taiwan's capabilities. US Patriot batteries play a big role in defense against TBMs and hypersonics. China is likely counting on a numbers game strategy where they would overwhelm the IADS with waves of missiles until breaks in the defense open, but China has proven incompetent in every conflict they've been involved in over the past century or more. False reporting and bluffing are the norm. They have been overhauling their large force exercise structuring to be more like the US with PLAAF, but Xi's culture reverts back to 1950s reporting style. I doubt anyone in the senior Chinese leadership even knows what's the true status of their readiness.
