@somethingelse9535 The US contributions to Ukraine are sunk costs in 22-36yr-old weapons that were scheduled for de-mil, long removed from the modern munitions feed into Active, Reserves, or National Guard units. We're talking about 1980s-1990s ATACMs, HIMARS, TOWs, Javelins, Patriots, M2A2 Bradleys, etc. We spent billions on them in the 1980s-1990s, and then are left with the burden of de-militarizing those systems, which is extremely expensive. Loading them up onto transports is exponentially cheaper and removes a significant burden DoD has to deal with every year.

@chillxxx241 Uh, Ukraine has been building missiles for generations. Many of the critical systems for S-300 & R-77/RVV-AE missiles were made in Ukraine. Russians were complaining after 2014 that they had supply issues for many modern missile systems, especially Foreign Military Sales to China and India with the RVV-AE (export monkey model Amraamski). When you looked at all available imagery of Russian Airspace Defense Fighter Regiments flying Su-27SM, none of them were carrying R-77s either. It wasn't until a Turk F-16C shot down a Russian Su-24M near the Syrian border that they finally sent a few R-77-1s to their expeditionary fighters in Syria. So the majority of R-77/RVV-AE manufacturing was going to FMS, and a lot of that relied on Ukrainian industrial and technical capacity. Ukraine also transferred an S-300 mobile Radar platform to the US under Trump's DoD, which really ticked off Putin and the General staff.

@Quicks1lvr. The munitions we're sending to Ukraine were already replaced 22-36yrs ago. It actually saves us tens of millions not to have to de-mil them. The figures reported on US donations to Ukraine are the spent/sunk costs of those weapons, not new production. It's more of a force-multiplier win-win for us and Europe. Biden WH was very late to agreeing to this BTW. Europeans waited a bit, then jumped on the wagon once they saw Putin wasn't able to seize Kiev. Trump was the only US President who sent US weapons prior to Feb 2022.

@m.x. So Ukraine was making S-300, R-77, RVV-AE, Antonov, 13 of the Soviet Naval yards (where most of the Russian Navy was built) for NATO all these years?
