  1. ​ @Manders-q2y  America's revenue stream is mostly internal. Only 15% of US GDP are exports, and the US is the #2 exporter in the world. Europe actually enjoys about a $200 Billion trade surplus each year with the US. Lots of US products have 100% tariffs, while those EU countries sell their high value products in the US without penalties. These are leftover trade policies from a post-WWII model of structuring alliances.

The problem is if you didn't make the multi-billion dollar investments in RDT&E and manufacturing capacity in your defense sector 30-40 years ago, you are not able to manufacture competent or relevant weapon systems today. What European nations invested $30 billion in development of a new 5th Generation fighter 30-40yrs ago? ATF got funded in the US starting in 1981. 4 prototypes flew in 1991. F-22A production began in 1997. ASTOVL funding for RDT&E started in 1983. X-35 first flight was Oct 2000. First production model rolled off the line in Dec 2006 for the A model. The actual ASTOVL model (F-35B) rolled off Dec 2008. Carrier version 2010. Now there are 1100 of them delivered to customers as of Jan 1st, 2025. Meanwhile the Euro Consortium doesn't have a 1990s AESA Radar in their fleet of 1980s tech Typhoons. US has been flying 3 different 6th Gen prototypes starting in 2017, with billions spent in RDT&E already. European parliaments haven't taken defense seriously for generations, so now they're stuck buying US advanced weaponry.

  4. UK, Germany, France, Poland, Italy, and Sweden have been run by peacenik females and limp-wristed low-T parliamentarians for generations now. That means they Purposely attacked their own defense spending as a matter of national policy and baseline assumptions in the controlling political parties. This has left all of those nations' defense industry development and manufacturing capacity in a very outdated and weak state of affairs. For example, it took several of those big nations decades to start manufacturing a 1980's era 4th generation fighter. While the UK, Germany, Italy, and Spain dragged their feet with funding and development of the Eurofighter Typhoon, the US already moved on with the tens of billions necessary to develop, test, and produce 5th Generation fighters, new air defense system upgrades for Patriot, and new combat systems across the force structure. Now the US has led the effort in mass-producing 5th Gen fighters, with over 1300 airframes delivered to air forces in the US, NATO, and Pacific. The Eurofighter consortium hasn't even put an AESA Radar in the Typhoon. Sweden is buying Patriots from the US, right along with Poland and other long-term NATO customers. Dependence on US advanced weaponry has only increased and is increasing more moving forward.
