@arranadams2776 US doesn't really need much of a maritime transport fleet since we grow our own food and produce our own energy. We're the 2nd largest exporter in the world, but exports are "only" 15% of our gargantuan economy.

Small caliber Machineguns suck at anti-aircraft due to limited range. 20mm is a baseline minimum in the AA role for air defense systems.

@stevehatcher7700 I was under the impression this was an unmanned aerial system, not aquatic. Do you have a source that has more details about that? Damage to the tanker didn't involve oil leakage or taking on water, so that sounds more like an aerial platform.

Small caliber CIWS don't work. Needs to be 20mm or higher due to range, especially if cruise and anti-ship missiles are to be encountered.

@Matt_from_Florida Regional players who don't want the hassle will want to use attacks to trigger the US to come back and provide their security again. US has finally wised-up to that, so we're happy to sell multi-billion FMS packages of our latest technology to them, rather than sacrifice the lives of our military and hundreds of billions of our own DoD budget to free-loaders.

@rogeredrinn4592 Projectile mass is relative to bore diameter. Once we step above .50 caliber and 14.5mm to 20mm, we go from small arms to AAA.

The US hasn't been getting much oil from the Middle East for many decades now. No need, when we have our own, Canada, and Mexico. Biden has shifted this against our favor though, with an increase in imports from Saudis and Russia, though they pale in comparison to Canada.
