@fredrikboden. As you can see by these well informed comments just because nuclear technology on ships and subs is one thing and entirely different from what could be permissible on land in a residential setting. So you can drop your silly conspiracy theory talk cuz you are way out of your league!!
1
I would reframe it as Newtonian physics could only go so far in explaining the universe then relativity came along to take us to the next step. Now we are at a crossroads with relativity and Quantum mechanics. Do these two have a common denominator??
1
@titaniumsandwedge Maybe not enlightening to you, but I'm sure there are a lot of researchers who relish the work!!
1
When it comes to mass production of SMR's apparently no one is doing it. Maybe China is making stabs at it, but they seem stuck in the prototype phase at best. With Nuscale pulling out of its plan to offer mass produced SMR's it looks no body else in the US is stepping up because it's not an economically viable option.
1
Very good report on the state of nuclear fusion progress. Thanks for posting!
1
Accept that the butterfly effect is not really relevant to this discussion in this interview. imho
1
@foxabilo If you think that then how about explaining why you that? Have a good day.
1
@foxabilo First you wonder if an infinite density matrix for computation is even possible then state that we are using these models that are wildly inaccurate. How do you reconcile that contradiction?
1
@foxabilo I think I will withhold judgment until the book and the blockbuster movie comes out.
1
😂😅. You sound like you are one projecting the hate with that passive aggressive comment. It's funny too that it's only the conservatives who talk about "wokeness" like its some kind of conspiracy against them. Some day you'll realize that every time you complain about woke anything you are betraying your own insecurity. At any rate have a great day.
1
A design project is one thing, but to mass produce them on a large scale is not doable at this time. The cost for say 100 SMR's which produce as much as one standard large reactor is the same or more in other words many tens of billions of $$$.
1
What do you mean by symmetry in this context?
1
I visited the Hobby/Eberly Telescope at the MacDonald Observatory in West Texas last fall and found it quite fascinating. A tour is possible of a network of older telescopes including the H/E telescope. The H/E telescope is a 9+ meter telescope which is doing dark energy research. At the gift shop I bought a t-shirt which said about dark energy that "It may be energy and it may not be dark".
1
Nuclear reactors on sub have wholly different certification than would be required for land based SMR's.
1
General Relativity is a theory yet has passed every test before it. In fact the theory of GR is necessary to adjust for the time dilation between earth and satellites or the space station. Evolution is a theory and remains the best explanation for the development of life on earth. And I could give you a hundred more examples!! Your comment reminds me of the old adage that people often criticize what they don't understand! I also notice that you offer no alternative!!
1
Fred. Can you point to any peer reviewed studies of these so called plasma phenomena? I have heard these odd so called theories that claim to explain all of the mysteries about black holes and neutron stars that confound astronomers, but have noticed these theories remain on the fringe of science. If something seems too good to be true it usually is. Anything that claims to explain all the phenomena that confounds astronomers is down right delusional. These theories are always very general and low on detail. The electric universe and null universe were quirky and flawed in the same way.

I'm glad to hear that Sabine thinks the England is a healthy country. I'm planning to move there now.

It is an interesting point to me that Wet Bulb Temperature has been around for many years and recently it has gotten more attention in the media, but still far short of what is needed. With heat waves occuring more often and getting more extreme Wet Bulb T must become common knowledge like other words in the vernacular. When I heard that the temperature was so hot in New Delhi a year or so ago that the average person was really struggling if they had to be outside for any length of time. And this is country that has high heat days frequently in the past.
1
That's an option I suppose and best answered by physicists.
1
An electron acts as both a particle and a wave. Your second question is unrelated to the first and even if it isn't we have way to ascertain the effect of a wave as gravitational construct at the atomic level. Gravity waves distort space and time they do not exert a gravitational force.
1
@undercoveragent9889 Spoken like the classically misinformed global warming denier that you are and as usual your denial is devoid of anything that looks like science!! Your comment also highlights how misinformed you are about climate because you go right to "jumping on the bandwagon" line without looking at the evidence that Sabine provided!!
1
@ronaldreagan5981 😅😂🤣. Thanks for the laughs, but I have read the comments of many of AGW deniers and yours on this video and one glaring omission is anything that looks like science in those denials of CC. But keep at it, if nothing else it makes for a spirited if one sided debate. And eventually you will come around to OUR way of thinking because the extreme weather will be so frequent and awful that you will literally have to be brain dead in hospital getting palliative care to not know something was going on. In the mean time have a great day!!

Claiming these people doubted the role of mathmatics in studying the natural world has long since been debunked. After all it has been 60 years since the last comment.
1
@JamesJoyce12 From a publication called Integralscience and an article entitled: An Analogy between Math and Empirical Science, I found this which appears to be saying what you are saying?! "Empirical science is distinguished from mathematics primarily in one crucial respect: while mathematics requires that its propositions conform to pure logic, empirical science requires in addition that its propositions conform to empirical data. Because mathematics is unconstrained by the contingencies and uncertainties of empirical data, it has the virtue of great certainty and generality in its truths"

As Sabine says at 17:30 a conservative estimate is that the "Global population will likely peak below carrying capacity". From my perspective we aren't addressing what the carrying capacity of the planet is unless unless we take into account the minimum requirements of land and resources for the natural world and no where in this video does Sabine give any serious consideration to this reality. This is why I really completely disagree with Musk's statement that the earth could hold many more people. Musk never says anything about the fact that wildlife on Earth is already in serious decline from population, pesticides, cell towers, lost if habitat to the growing population, climate change and I could go on with dozens more threats to life on earth. The very nature of our modern society is a huge threat to all life on Earth includes the human species itself. Consequently, Sabine's talk is disappointing to me because it leaves out the large dimension of the human impact on the natural world. And that isn't a very scientific perspective imo!!
1
Thanks Sabine for covering some of the latest science news. The one thing that didn't work for me were the "phone calls" which seemed like a weak attempt at comic relief, but that's just my opinion.
1
In the same way that we are beginning to see solar systems around distant stars, but better.
1
Physicists are able to fire individual photons at a screen say in the double slit experiment. These particles will pass through the slits as waves forming an array of vertical lines on the screen in back. However if the experiment is observed directly the wave function collapses and we see particles instead and without the intersecting wave pattern on the screen. Particles can act as both particle and wave. That is basic physics.

I don't have the evidence to support this statement, but my thinking is that western Pacific experienced a higher than normal level of precipitation because of the La Niña that was very strong last year. At the same time the southwest experienced a worsening of the 22 year drought. Both conditions were keeping with a strong La Niña. This year it is predicted to switch to a mild El Niño so conditions will improve on both sides of the Pacific.
1
@peterpaniscus988 Thanks for responding back. There has been something new learned from that eruption right until recently so who knows what else may come out of reviewing the data.
1
@BerndFelsche But if those reactors are so much safer then why aren't they built and used around the world?? Research has been done on these systems for years with no sign of significant progress. Maybe because they have their own inherent technical problems. In other words your alternative suggestion doesn't help.

@andrewbrickett8895 Here are a couple key points on water vapor to understand its role in climate change as I understand it. For one water vapor is not a forcing agent in the climate as CO2 and methane are. When CO2 and CH4 increase in the atmosphere they can hold more heat thus leading to warming over time. And as the climate warms it can hold more moisture. So water vapor over the long term increases as the climate warms. This can lead to higher humidity levels which can lead to increased precipitation in some areas. Water vapor is transient in the atmosphere unlike the GHG which remain for up to ten years from CH4 or over 100 for CO2. Water vapor is also a feedback mechanism where by it can increase as the temperature warms thus allowing the atmosphere to warm more creating a vicious cycle, but only up to a point. As far as clouds go the more cloud cover there is during the heat the less sunlight reaches the ground to warm it up and less heat is then reradiated back into the atmosphere. But at night cloud cover tends to hold heat in. This is all further complicated by weather phenomena like El Niño or the Northern Pacific oscillation.
1
@mbvgvskvrs868 Water vapor only effects significant change in warming SECONDARY to the GHG such as CO2, CH4 or NO2. That is because those gases are in the atmosphere for up to ten years for CH4 to over 100 years for CO2. Water vapor is in the atmosphere for days. It strength is in its feedback mechanism to warm to atmosphere more and to create a vicious cycle of sorts on a short term basis. So think of water vapor acting on weather in the short term while the GHG act long term. As the climate gradually warms over decades there is increasing likelihood of more intense heat waves and more moisture can be retained in the atmosphere.
1
This is truly the existential threat of a lifetime. For many people unfortunately it is like the frog in a slowly warming pot of water. At what point will they scream "WHEN DID IT START GETTING SO HOT"? Oh well the best that many of us can do is follow the old English cliche oft quoted during the bombing of Britain in WW II, Keep calm and carry on!
1
I'm not sure what you are trying to say there, but general relativity theory is well tested and experiment supports the theory that massive objects distort space and time thus altering the path that light takes through space. This explains gravitational lensing.
1
The hurricane season could be a mixed blessing so to speak. It all depends on how fast this El Nino ramps up because that could lead to more wind shear. On the other hand the north Atlantic waters are especially warm which can lead to the development of strong hurricanes. And because the dust is down from Africa hurricanes are more likely to be sustained coming across the Atlantic.
1
Here is an example of the GR theory put to use on a daily basis. The use of GPS technology requires that there be compensation for the time dilation between earth and orbiting satellities and other space craft. Because time moves slower as one moves away from earth relativity theory must be used to adjust this time dilation. Otherwise the technology would be useless. Like your comment is useless because you reject relativity without any basis and ridicule it simply because you don't understand it and people often judge what they don't understand!!!
1
You do know the old saying "Be careful what you ask for" don't you??
1
I question the statistic that Afghanistan has a population replacement rate of 6.0. Because of poor management by the Taliban and other problem people are in a desperate condition and I don't see people have a lot of children under those conditions. Clearly, the US needs to lift the sanctions on Afghanistan because this mostly hurts the people. This is indeed a complicated subject made worse by rigid ideological perspectives.
1
Pretorious. So you don't agree with it, but how much do even understand?? People often judge and criticize what they don't understand to compensate for their intellectual deficits!!
1
I'll wait for your paper on the subject.
1
I empathize with what you are experiencing because I know that high heat is much more than you are used to. Here in southern New Mexico in southwest US we are hitting 40-42 °C in the afternoon. Fortunately it is mostly dry heat. But that is actually kind of normal for this time year.
1
Pierre. What were you expecting some sort of perfect explanation even though none is possible at this time??
1
This quick heating of the north Atlantic is only the latest example of how the extremes in weather outpace the generally conservative projections of the IPCC and climate scientists in general. In point of fact climate scientists focus on trends in climate and not as much on how extreme the weather can become. As the climate warms because of accumulating GHG then extreme weather will become more frequent, but no one can predict how much those extremes will be. There is a certain inherent variability in the weather. The warming climate is ENHANCING that variability.
1
What are talking about? Dr Palmer appeared dispassionate through that whole interview.
1
I was thought you were a rational person Sabine who uses scientific evidence to make observations and draw conclusions. So I found it funny to see the title of saying that you prayed that the figures were wrong with the implication being what those numbers reveal about the severity of climate change. You know if course that praying for something like that is the definition of unscientific. Course I am also ridiculing your thumbnail cuz it seems out of character. But that must be quirky side which you have admitted to in the past. More seriously I found that this was a decent video addressing the climate change that we are seeing accelerate. Thanks for taking the risk to address something outside of your area of expertise.

@Ivanivan What does mean .25 speed?

It is much different for those SMR's are to be built on land in large numbers and economically. The military gets whatever it wants with limited regard for the cost. SMR's built on a large scale for residential use would require more stringent regulation. And it should be a sign of the difficulty of mass producing SMR's when the company Nuscale backed out of a planned production of SMR's. Read the comments of others who have actually worked with nuclear power plants and understand the obstacles to making it happen on a large scale.
1
I know what it means to be embarrassed about one's country because I am embarrassed to be an American because this country voted for trump to be president in 2016. Now 8 years and multiple felony and civil guilty verdicts later many in this country want to reelect him to be president!! So I'm not just embarrassed I'm disgusted with the part of the government that could make that possible. e.g. the Supreme Court of the United States and the Republican to name two of the most guilty parties.
1
@alexleibovici4834 😅. You don't have any say in how I feel about the atrocities committed by the US government in the name of the people of this country. I expect the leaders to do their god damn jobs and when they fail at their responsibility because of blatant corruption and abuse of power you better believe I feel embarrassed. I didn't vote for him and didn't have to because people like trump bring shame on the whole country.
