Those numbers are based on data collected over many years. What is your source for data?

The question is when and how fast will it occur?! All of the developed countries are seeing declining or stable populations. Parts of India are even seeing a decline. But countries with a lower average age like in Africa, Indonesia, etc are seeing a higher birth rate and will for some time yet.

Actually, I think a dramatic population decline is the only thing that can save the country because of many current factors. The rapid growth of the last few decades has led to lack foresight in handling the current drought. Combine that with a housing market that is collapsing because it built too much too fast leading an untold number of Chinese refusing to pay their mortgage anymore because their apartments are unfinished and in many cases WON'T be finished because many of the builders are broke. Add to this are serious pollution problems which threaten the health of ALL life in China including the dwindling wildlife. Thus the pollution will only worsen for some time yet until there is a significant decline in population.

An interesting and disturbing aspect of the recently concluded 20th Congress of the CCP is to focus more on security. The Chinese hierarchy may believe that they have a limited chance to push their agenda because of changing demographics. This was also addressed in this video. This security issue could mean that China could actively try to take control of Taiwan. And South China Sea activity could also increase.

@Bring back 12.5. The current circumstance is different for most of the world as well as China. Biological studies have shown that when a population in a given area exceeds the carrying capacity of that region the population collapses. It's quite unavoidable. When we look at the huge population of China combined with wide spread environmental degradation and now the growing consequences of global heating then a population collapse is foregone conclusion. The people could struggle on with this status quo, but the clock is ticking. If not this drought then the next one which could be worse. Flooding is still killing large numbers of people too despite the Three Gorges Dam being to limit such flooding. So it goes.

@Muffelll That's also what I'm saying. Xi Jinping said security was priority going forward. I think it likely that Taiwan will be under increasing threat from China.
