  1. That's about the best explanation I have heard yet for the ENSO phenomena. This makes it easier to explain to someone else. Your explanation implies that the warm water mass in the southern Pacific will tend toward the Eastern side of the Pacific. And only the strong trade winds can push it west. The weak trade winds allow the warm mass of water to move back east. This means that the movement of this warm water in the south Pacific moves secondary to the Trade Winds or their absence. So the cyclical change in the trade winds causes the oscillation in the south Pacific.
