@Hoder Harris. The variant is more infectious then the earlier covid strain. And you say that the vaccine works on the current variant, but people still have to get the vaccine. Less then 20 % of the population has been fully vaccinated. And probably close to 40 % have gotten one shot. That means more then 50% have no vaccine yet and a up to a third of the population says they won't get vaccinated at least not yet. We are still in very uncertain times with cases increasing.

I think it is more about wanting to make sure their populations get vaccinated before helping other countries. Europe appears to have dropped the ball with investing in their own vaccines and with many countries opened too soon a serious spike is hitting many of those west Eurpoean countries. The US may have an ample supply of vaccine, but too many states reopened too early here resulting in an increase in cases here as well. And with some variants proliferating in places around the country this adds to the problem.
