Oh right because sending an autonomous vehicle to land on the moon is just so easy right?? 🙄

It's really quite simple if you pay attention. 50 years ago the Apollo landers were manned so they had the ability to compensate and improvise in order to land safely. Now this lander reached the moon with a methlox cryofuel, first time ever and touched down using autonomous technology so no human present to compensate and improvise on the fly like before. It landed in one piece on the south pole of the moon which was another first and it was done very inexpensively.

@johnsmith1953x Yes, and only India was the other country able to put a lander on the moon successfully with Chandrayaan 3 after a couple of unsuccessful tries since China's successful touch down in 2019. Japan and now the US did land their landers in one piece, but as we all know they tipped over which compromised their ability to complete their missions.

So you are essentially ignoring the last 6 decades when cameras worked perfectly?!?!

@greyskullmcbeef Hindsight is 20/20 as the saying goes, but I'm not so sure about that! This US made lander landed on the south pole of the moon FIRST TIME! Using a methlox cryo fuel FIRST TIME! was built by a private company Intuitive Machines for a bargain basement price (as far as space travel is concerned) FIRST TIME.

Good for you, that almost sense!

@joeljoseph26 The Chang'e 3 lander was just the first of three landers to reach the lunar surface. Chang'e 4 landed on the far side of the moon in January 2019. And the Chang'e 5 not landed on the lunar surface in Nov. 2020, but also collected a sample and returned it to earth.

The lander touched down on the moon in one piece! So it tipped over, most of its instruments are still able to function. Fortunately you don't get to determine what success means for a mission like this.

In what is this like trying to be like Space X?? Space X provided the launch vehicle which gave the lander a perfect insertion into its trajectory toward the moon. The lander set down on the moon in one piece, but tipped over in part because the software needed to find the proper landing spot was not working properly. The first four times that Space X tried to land its Falcon 9 booster it crashed and blew up before landing successfully. See the difference.
