On July 4th 1918 American troops first fought in WW1 at the Battle of Hamel, the first MoH of WW1 was awarded to Thomas A Pope who fought under the command of the Australian general Sir John Monash. That was the first time American troops fought under a foreign general since the Revolutionary War.
