The GOP's Conservative Coalition used to be somewhat isolationist, anti-New Deal, non-interventionist, and non-expansionist up to Robert A Taft and the 1952 election. Thomas E Dewey, an early progressive neoconservative governor from New York, campaigned against Taft, who was the front runner in the primary, by creating the Eisenhower and Nixon ticket. Dewey, and the Eisenhower administration were pro-New Deal, pro-interventionist, and were UN golden boys. After the 1952 election, the GOP was overtaken by the neocons.
President Trump is the first Republican president to have similar beliefs as Taft, since 1952.
