The reason that Jefferson wished for a separation of church and state, was that, at that time, socialism had just been born in France, and its doctrines were starting to be preached by certain religious sects. They had just rid themselves of the very state religion that started preaching those doctrines, which changed its name, after the US Revolution, to the Episcopalians. One could call that the days of early socialism, which was originating from both Britain and, especially, France.
