They fled to NYC for a reason, which was the Christian Socialists, who had teamed up with another ethnic religion's secret society, and started the first social science schools in Boston and NYC in the late 1800s. That was why Trotsky was in NYC just before the Russian Revolutions of 1917. He was lecturing at those very schools. That was brought into Columbia U first by the Christian Socialists. Dewey, though an atheist, was leading it from Columbia, along with several Episcopalians inside Columbia.
