The Federal Govt allowed a small handful of wealthy media barons, (who already had a dark past), and who conspired with their preferred shareholders, to take over the independent media sources across the US, and thus, monopolize the legacy news (print, radio, and TV). Money was no problem, as they were financed by their very close friends in the banking and capital funds sector. These same people have been behind the push, since Nixon, (if not before), for globalization and state capitalism. The Nixon Admin is where most of it starts, especially the collaboration with a handful of Eurasian nation states, (Group of Five), formed at the Nixon WH.
