I don't believe that alcoholism was as bad as the temperance movement made it out to be. Men worked, and after work, it was common for them to stop at the public house to have a drink or two, to learn of the days news, and what was taking place politically, etc, before heading home. Many of the wives didn't like that, and, of course, the church brainwashed many.
That is not to say that there weren't alcoholics, but the temperance movement was tied closely with the socialist movement, and the early feminists and suffragettes.
