They have been reinterpreting religious dogma from the start, and it was worse before the printing press. Even after the first Christian bibles were printed, certain governments stepped in and had them edited (KJV as an example). Worse are those that take apocryphal writing to heart, believe it, and use that to reinterpret their religion, thus, forming sects, which have led to sectoral violence. It's done by the orthodox as much as the heterodox these days. If you ever follow the path of comparative religion (the Pilgrim's Path) and go back into history as far as one can go, you find that much of it is bunk, and is based upon man's law. The priest-kings that were deified created that. I followed that path and came to the conclusion that the only thing I believe was that something created the universe and the big bang. Something that exists cannot originate from nothing. I am a realist and take a realist's view on all religions.

Look into Christian Socialism, as the Dissenters are who first brought those beliefs into the US. Later, the protestants are who infected post-secondary education with it by the late 1800s. Columbia U was the first college to have a social science school, and you will find that the Episcopalians (Anglicans) were the first to bring this about, starting in Boston and New York City. It spread into several other protestant religions and it infected Roman Catholicism as well.
