It was good in many aspects. Slavery is a different issue, as it was only tangentially related to colonialism, and slave ran plantations were only one of many different businesses during that time, which were exported across the world. Not everyone profited from slavery like the left claims they did. Of course, when you state this, a D will put his or her head in the sand, because they still see themselves as planters on a plantation.
A good example are the northern US states (colonies), which were based around manufacturing and the industrial revolution. That came from colonialism and merry ol' England. The mechanization that resulted from it, helped stop slavery everywhere.
Guess where Africa would be today, if it were never colonized, and left alone. The same with the Middle-East, Asia, and the Americas.

Hero of Alexandria's mechanics (10-70 AD). He invented the first small steam engine, and his designs were used in the Egyptian temples to fake magic, with automatic opening doors, etc. Charlatanry and parlor tricks used in religion.
Freemasonry, the first western fraternity, is based upon studying comparative religion, which is known as taking the pilgrim's path in search of more light (truth). That is, if one goes down this road, as most members do not. The fraternity gives hints in every degree, and if you follow the breadcrumbs, you find the real roots of religion and politics. That is why anthropology, phonology, and archaeology, etc, have their roots with its members. The fraternity, from its founding, has been about supporting higher education, and the enlightenment. It was never about what conspiracy theorists and certain religions claim.

@Skelley-Priest Actually, it was already known within religion, especially in Kabbalah, and it is written about in the Zohar, though metaphorically. Islam had also written about it, and Christian scholars knew of it as well. It comes from Genesis, verse three: "And God said: 'Let there be light.' And there was light." Before that, the heavens or waters were chaotic and void, and the "heavenly bodies" and earth were unformed.
What LemaƮtre stated, was that since the galaxies seemed to be moving away from each other, it was proof of the explosion of light, and a finite age of creation.
