@richardpowell1772 During ancient times, the Rex Nemorensis, or King of the Wood, was a Priest-King over the sacred grove, which later becomes the temple. He was considered a demigod, much like Jesus and Odin. Remember, Jesus was called a king. That is the root of the divine right of kings.
"From the still glassy lake that sleeps
"Beneath Aricia’s trees –
"Those trees in whose dim shadow
"The ghastly priest doth reign,
"The priest who slew the slayer,
And shall himself be slain."__Macaulay
In the grove (Diana's) was an ancient oak tree, which held the bough. Any young challenger to the King had to break off the bough, which was protected by guardians, and it showed that he was acceptable to challenge the Rex if allowed. After that, it was a fight to the death. The old Rex would either survive, or they would obtain a new one with the victor.
The sacred grove is also where the wild hunt originates, as well as many other things.
There's a statue of Diana in the middle of a round pool, which is in the gardens just north of the Hampton Court Palace in London. The monarch is also the pope of the Anglican Church.
