It's psychologically about someone wanting another person, or a group, to absolve them of their guilt. The RCC went so far as to put on a huge con, by selling indulgences. They made a lot of money from those who felt guilty, and were wealthy. The correct ideology is to be a moral person who doesn't need to feel guilt.
