All religions, from what I have found in my studies, are based upon creation and procreation, or birth. It leads back to the moon god and goddess copulating, and giving birth to the sun god, which the Hebrews called King Sol. Even Christianity is based upon this, where the cathedrals are built to represent the feminine aspect in their architecture (entering the womb), as well as to show both the moon god and goddess, and the sun god on the front of the cathedral in statuary and the three doors. The male aspect is either an obelisk outside, or the tower and spire. That is much older than Christianity, by the way, and leads back to the most ancient religions.
The seasons represent birth at the end of winter, the young child or teen in the spring, the grown man in the summer, and the old but wise man in the autumn. Again, birth to death, and rebirth. Sex festivals were planned for the spring, or after the last of December, to bring about new life as the fields were also planted.
