  1. The root of occult is "occlude," which means to hide, stop, close up, or obstruct. In other words, it's hidden knowledge, and when one goes down that road of study, you learn the dirty truth about the aristocracy, politics, and the roots of religion. Knowledge is valuable, and worth more than gold, which is why much of it was hidden. It separated the aristocrats from the lowest yeoman, and the plebeian and serf classes (commoners).
