It started just after the war with the claim that the war was only about slavery, and it was concocted by the WASP Federalists in the north, who had also been reading Marx's screeds in Greeley's newspaper. Many had already started siding with Marx and socialism in New York. By 1900, the Federalists had a stranglehold on both parties when Wilson was elected.
