Both have the same roots in left wing politics going back to the British Whigs, but one was more radical, and more authoritarian, as well as tied to the French revolutionaries than the other. That's why the split of the DRP eventually occurred, where the Rs became Whigs, but then the Rs, again, under Lincoln.
