That made their family famous, and gave them their entrance into politics, and wide public exposure. His father was a small town (Pop. 375) mayor. A. J. used to climb over embankments and hillsides to garbage dumps, while wearing an old suit, and demand to the press that they be cleaned up. He chipped in himself. That was a huge problem in Appalachia before 1980, as there was no garbage service except for the major cities. In Kentucky, every time the river would rise, you could watch numerous empty milk jugs floating by all day long. They were called "Kentucky Ducks." Virginia and West Virginia had the same problem.
