There are many voters, throughout the US, who want the "Old Right" back. They're fed up, and have had enough. The Old Right, which is what Trump tried to bring back, was the cause of the Neocons and Neoliberals attacking him as they did. The last leader of the Old Right, Robert A Taft, controlled not only the conservative faction of the GOP, but the conservative Democrats as well.
The Old Right was also the originator of America First, which is where Trump obtained his ideas, except Trump did not want the same people involved who tried to hijack the America First movement during that time (communists and national socialists). He stated his disdain for them when he ran as the reform candidate.
"Above all, the Old Right were unified by opposition to what they saw as the danger of domestic dictatorship by Democratic President Franklin Roosevelt and The New Deal program. Most were unified by their defense of natural inequalities, tradition, limited government, and anti-imperialism, as well as their skepticism of democracy and the growing power of Washington."
Ike and Nixon brought in the Neocon New Right, and ruined the GOP. Trump was the first to become close to restoring it back to the pre-1952 ideology.
