The problem, today, is that most have been so pampered by their parents, that they are too lazy to garden.

@Seahawksl1969 There's community gardens as well, but they're mainly in Europe. You don't see them much in the US, but there were some in the large cities here and there. I've also seen them laid out in wooden boxes upon the flat roofs of apartments.

@Seahawksl1969 Yes, I remember a few that were grown in vacant lots, and of course, they were quickly shown on the news (community activism). There were fights, though, about the owner of the lot, especially after it was sold, and someone wanted to redevelop it. These were generally in the old slum areas back in the 70s. They pointed at this in the movie: Joe's Apartment. I, personally, see nothing wrong with communal gardens, and cities could alot some land for this purpose, if they would. Also, as Styx mentioned, get rid of the restrictions in some areas, about what one can do with their back lot, which they own, and pay taxes on.

@lindseythecynicalgeek3033 During WWII, there were food shortages, and most everyone that could, gardened, as well as kept poultry, etc. After the war, everyone became so used to driving to the grocery, that they quit gardening. Of course, this rubbed off on the children as normal behavior. Yes, I was in 4H during HS.

@PowersPlays97 There lies the problem. Gardens have to be weeded, and kept up. Today, all anyone wants to do, is hop in their car, and drive down to the grocery on the corner. When they arrive home, they complain about having to cook their own meal. The rest of the time, they can't pry themselves from the PC, iPhone, nor TV.

@wigletron2846 A twenty foot by sixty foot garden can supply three families, with one child each. That yields enough to supply all at harvest, and through the winter after canning, and freezing.
