  1. To think that the Soviets didn't have influence, or weren't active in Egypt during that time, is highly naive. Egypt was where the Soviets recruited Arafat, trained him, and then placed him into Palestine. After WWII, Egypt had several nations intel services roaming about inside her, and they were all active. The Suez Canal is very important to every nation.
