Bill Buckley and friends (Kristol brothers et al.) were the Trotskyites who left the political left over FDR's friendliness with Stalin, and claimed to convert to the right. They became the Warhawks in the GOP, and were the fathers of neoconservatism. That is where the Bush and Cheney families came from as well, and they're why Reagan wasn't as successful as he could have been. Reagan was surrounded by them, and being told what to do from the same lot from within the party. During 45, they were behind the Lincoln Project and were leading the GOP opposition.

@mileshall9235 The Trotskyites, still, to this day, claim to be anti-communists. In reality, they were anti-Stalinists, but fully believed in Trotsky's politics. They were brought into the National Review by Buckley himself, and became editors. All of them from the so-called New York Intellectuals. The same Buckley that was close to the Bush family over oil, Spook Central, and Yale. You could find the same beliefs in Yale, at that time, where Buckley and the Bushes attended, as you could in Columbia U and several NYC colleges.
