You just defined what magic really is. It was the power that the ancient rulers and religions held to control the masses. Things started to fall apart when the bible was translated, and the illiterate began learning to read. Here, they found that some of the sermons by the clergy were pure hogwash, and that they were being lied to, thus, the start of the reformation and the formation of what would become the left. When you look at today's politics, it's all left-wing over the reformation anymore, though one side is more moderate and conservative than the other, which contain the anarchists, etc.
