The fact is, the UK cut a deal with the US just after WWII to form the Atlantic Bloc, a trade and protection bloc, while Mainland Europe began veering in a different direction, led by the likes of de Gaulle. That was why the US and UK intel agencies worked to unseat him after he was elected a second time in the sixties. It was also why he would not join NATO fully. The big problem occurred later, when the UK decided to side with the EU socialist lot, and not the old Atlantic Bloc with the US as promised.
