I wonder if the author of the NYT article knows that many of those abolitionists were actively racist, in that they openly despised black people, and wrote about it, or were quoted by the newspapers? They actually wanted emancipation in the hopes of blacks leaving the US, or dying out, and were quoted saying so. Worse, they did not want them moving north, nor, to the west.
