Eisenhower, who was a progressive in favor of the UN, made a speech to Congress that you should read, titled "Special Message to the Congress on the Situation in the Middle East." The speech was made on January 05, 1957, and can be found at The American Presidency Project website.
That, and a confidential Eisenhower Doctrine, as well as the Atlantic Charter, was what led the US and UK to where we are today. It led to what occurred in Korea, Vietnam, and all across the Middle-East. It was about what was really behind nation building, and the spreading of liberal democracy.
In the US, both D and R political parties are from the liberal movement, especially the Whigs that settled from Britain. However, there were two different lines of this liberal thought, which professor Mearsheimer from the University of Chicago described. They are the classical or modus vivendi liberalism, which became the conservative side, and modern or progressive liberalism with idealists, which became the leftist and new or "neo" side of politics by the late 1800s, and the latter leads to internationalism, with the want of spreading this ultra-liberal Wilsonian belief worldwide at the end of a gun barrel, which has failed every time.
The progressives were booted out of the GOP between 1910-12, but regained control after 1952, which was when progressive neoconservatism took control.
The professor gave a good lecture about this, titled: John J. Mearsheimer, “The Roots of Liberal Hegemony”
