You're spot on, and the roots of this have always laid with the protestants. Remember where Robert Owen's mill was located, which, one might well say, was a commune, and then he came here, to America, where he tried setting up all those communes that failed? Owen leads us to Engels, who thought Owen had the right ideas.
Sadly, this came into the Anglican church, too, by the early 1800s, with the Social Gospel, which was the start of Christian Socialism, and that came stateside by the late 1800s, to Boston.
